Your business is somewhere on this map… the question is where and what is the time scale?
Actually …your mission is to compress the time scale and reach success, freedom and lifestyle options faster and with less “learnings”(euphemism for failures).
You fight the growth and success battle every day.
Some of the battlefield is unknown territory. Some paths are less traveled. Some people have perfected those paths and routes up the proverbial mountain.
Do you scale a mountain on your own? Or, do you hire a guide, a “sherpa” for success?
You see…you can train and prepare. You can buy provisions and recruit members of your expedition.
But, if you do not have a Sherpa you will take the less desirable path, you will have more mistakes and you will burn precious time learning those lessons.
Time is the only resource we all have exactly the same amount of. Yet, some achieve massive success in that 24 hours a day, in fewer days/weeks/years than others. So, time is the key.
Your time to learn how to model success is more valuable than time learning to deal with failures. I call this the Roomba ROIT…
Roomba ROIT – earned its name from that little floor sweeping Roomba robot known for giving cats the ride of their 9-lives. Relevant here because the robot bumps into things(makes mistakes) and then has to pivot to try to succeed. It does this bump, pivot and repeat cycle incessantly. ROIT is something people skip over in preference for ROI.
ROIT is Return on Invested TIME.
Think about it…
if time is the only constant for each of us and more success can be had in less time by some of us…
Then it follows that getting maximum return on invested time is – crucial.
To comfortably go where you’ve never gone before, you need a guide. Someone that has been there, done that. Someone that has dealt with managing growth through the next level, the level above that an each level you want to ascend into. It also helps to have someone that has made and seen some of the epic failures.
For rapidly growing businesses, I’ll often advise them to understand that the people that get you to $1mm in revenue are not the people that can get you to $10mm and $30mm and $100mm and $300mm and $1bn and, etc. It’s totally natural to have to up-level the team to handle this ascension.
The up-leveling can be organic by training, education and coaching of existing team members. The up-leveling can be by grooming people to step into different and often more critical leadership roles. The up-leveling almost always includes rotation of people out of and into the business.
The easiest example is that a CEO of a startup is rarely the same one that manages the business once it goes public. History is littered with examples of epic failures of that. In the scenarios where the CEO succeeds long-term in that ascension, there are support reasons: Great Board, Great Talent Bench in the upper levels, massive focus on personal growth, and etc.
For your business to ascend to the next level, you need someone’s perspective from having traveled that path before you and having made those costly, time sucking mistakes. Having been involved in many successful startups, growth stage and exits…I’ve been there, done that. I’ve operated from an idea and a laptop and I’ve operated with the multi-billion dollar war-chest of a Fortune 50 business and everywhere in-between. I’ve navigated the shark-filled waters you haven’t even seen yet.
This leads me to an announcement – I am going to conduct some very intimate workshops to help a few businesses chart their path toward more growth, scale and into options for Exit/Liquidity – with a bias towards freedom and lifestyle.
The last time I did this, there was an 8-figure software business spin-off created, a solo-consultant created a portfolio of equity in nearly 10 businesses in less than 18 months, a music-industry veteran created a derivative business, a multi-national digital publisher acquired a major content brand, and a global education icon hit over-drive and is crushing it, like they never had.
